Where Paris began. Two thousand years of continuous history on an island in the middle of the Seine — Notre-Dame restored, Sainte-Chapelle, the medieval street grid and the city's oldest stones.
Paris was born on an island. The Gaulish tribe the Romans found here — the Parisii — had built their settlement on a natural crossing point of the Seine, and the city has been growing outward from that island ever since. Two thousand years later, the Île de la Cité still feels like the city's centre of gravity: Notre-Dame restored and newly luminous, Sainte-Chapelle with its extraordinary 13th-century stained glass, the medieval street pattern that predates Haussmann by six centuries. This circuit begins at the beginning.
I was driving in Paris the night of the fire in April 2019 and watched the spire fall. Visiting the restored cathedral with clients now is something I approach with some personal feeling, and that directness is part of what I offer on this circuit.
The upper chapel is one of the most extraordinary Gothic interiors in existence. I time the visit for the light, and I make sure you arrive with enough time to stand still in it.
A few streets on the Île de la Cité preserve a layout that has been in continuous use since the Roman occupation. We walk them slowly.
Notre-Dame's restoration is not complete in the sense of being finished — it is complete in the sense of being alive again. The craftspeople are still working on the details. That ongoing quality is part of what makes visiting it now different from visiting it in ten years.
The reopening of Notre-Dame in December 2024 was one of the most significant cultural events in recent French history — not just for France but for everyone who had watched the fire in April 2019 and felt the loss personally. The restored cathedral is both faithful to the original and definitively contemporary: new lighting, new liturgical furniture, a restored spire taller than the one that fell.
I find that visiting it now, when the emotion of the restoration is still recent, produces a quality of attention in clients that even the most beautiful architecture does not always generate. That attention is worth something.
