Sancerre is the kind of place that most wine lovers have heard of and almost none have visited. The hilltop town rises above the Loire valley with a 360-degree view of the vineyards that surround it — and the wine produced on those slopes, from a single grape variety on a single type of soil, is one of the most immediately recognisable whites in the world. Across the river, Pouilly-Fumé adds a second great appellation to the same afternoon. This is a circuit for people who take wine seriously — and for people who simply love the landscape of the French countryside seen from a hilltop on a clear day.
We leave Paris heading south. The landscape opens up considerably as we leave the Île-de-France — you begin to feel the space of the Loire valley well before you arrive.
We arrive in Sancerre from below, following the road that winds up through the vineyards. The view from the top — the Loire valley spread in every direction, the Pouilly vineyards visible on the opposite bank — is one of the great French countryside panoramas.
Sancerre has over 300 producers. I recommend visiting a small family domaine for the most personal experience — the wines are often as good as the famous names, the welcome is warmer, and the insight into the appellation is more direct.
The restaurants in and around Sancerre serve the kind of food that makes you understand why French cuisine is what it is — simple ingredients, intelligent preparation, Loire wines by the glass. I recharge the vehicle during lunch.
A short drive across the river to the Pouilly-Fumé appellation. The soil is different, the wine is different — a second perspective on the same landscape and the same grape variety, which is one of the pleasures of this circuit.
