Canal Saint-Martin
& East Paris

The canal, the lock sequence, the underground tunnel, the Bassin de la Villette — and the neighbourhoods of eastern Paris that have been quietly reinventing themselves while everyone was looking west.

The Canal Saint-Martin runs for 4.5 kilometres through some of the most dynamically changing neighbourhoods in Paris, from the Arsenal basin at the Place de la Bastille to the Bassin de la Villette and beyond. It is a canal that was built by Napoleon to supply factories, that became famous in a 1938 film, that disappeared briefly underground, that was discovered by a generation of young Parisians in the 2000s, and that is now one of the most visited watercourses in France. It is also, on a weekday morning before the cafés fill up, one of the most quietly beautiful places in the city.

What Makes This Circuit Different

⚙️
Engineering you can see working

The nine locks that raise the canal 25 metres, the cast-iron swing bridges, the underground tunnel section that passes beneath two kilometres of the city — the Canal Saint-Martin is one of the finest pieces of visible engineering in France.

🚶
Neighbourhoods in mid-transformation

The eastern arrondissements around the canal are in the process of change — new galleries, new restaurants, new communities overlaying older working-class and immigrant neighbourhoods. I find this the most interesting part of contemporary Paris to drive through.

🌊
The underground Paris

Two sections of the canal run in covered tunnels beneath the city. That fact surprises almost everyone who hears it, and experiencing it — either from the quai above or, on a canal boat, from inside the tunnel — is genuinely strange and memorable.

A neighbourhood that knows how to live

The quais on a weekday morning, the cafés that have been good since before the neighbourhood became famous, the market that still serves the local population — there is a quality of life on this circuit that is its own argument for visiting.

The Best Time
to Be Here

I am consistent on this: the Canal Saint-Martin is best experienced on a weekday morning, before noon, between Tuesday and Thursday. That is when the neighbourhood belongs to the people who live in it — when the cafés are occupied by locals, the market stalls are active, the quais are quiet. The weekend version is different and worth knowing, but it is a different experience. For a first visit, I recommend the quiet morning.

Chauffeur's Tips

  • The canal boat trips (not included) from the Bassin de l'Arsenal pass through the underground section — book in advance in high season if this interests you
  • The Philharmonie de Paris has a free panoramic terrace — accessible during opening hours, one of the best views of the northern city
  • Ten Belles on the rue de la Grange-aux-Belles has been the best coffee on the canal since before the neighbourhood became famous — worth noting for a post-circuit stop
