This circuit follows that Paris: the communities, the food geography and the neighbourhoods that most international visitors never reach, and that most Parisians themselves explore only partially.
Every neighbourhood on this circuit tells its story through what it sells and what it eats. I approach it as a food geographer rather than a tour guide — the markets and the kitchens are the primary texts.
These are functioning communities with their own social infrastructure — temples, community associations, specialist shops — that exist largely independently of the tourist Paris. I show you that world as it actually operates.
Most of the market stalls, street food vendors and small restaurants in these neighbourhoods are cash-only. I mention this here because it affects the experience significantly.

One of the things that strikes me most about driving Paris every day is how precisely the city's food is mapped onto its demography. The West African produce market is in the 18th because the West African community is in the 18th. The Japanese restaurants are on one street in the 1st because the Japanese business community is nearby. The Tamil spice shops are near the Gare du Nord because that is where the community arrived and settled. Reading the food is reading the city.
