Paris once had over 150 glass-roofed commercial galleries. Twenty survive. This circuit visits the finest — spaces where the 19th century is preserved not as a museum but as a living street.
Before Haussmann rebuilt Paris, before the department store changed shopping forever, the covered passages were the city's most sophisticated commercial spaces. Glass-roofed, heated, safe from the mud of unpaved streets — they were where Parisians came to browse, to be seen, to drink coffee and buy books. Most were demolished. The twenty that survive are among the most atmospheric spaces in the city, almost entirely unknown to international visitors, and permanently open to anyone who knows where to find them.
Several of the passages on this circuit retain their original 19th-century shopfronts, mosaic floors and gas lamp fittings. The quality of the preservation is extraordinary.
Built precisely for Parisian rain, these passages require no umbrella and no plan B. On a grey day, the warm light from the shopfronts creates an atmosphere that fine weather cannot replicate.
These are not museum pieces. The wine merchant has been in his passage since 1905. The toy shop has not moved since the 1950s. A hotel has been operating inside one passage since 1846.
Each passage tells a different story — commercial ambition, architectural rivalry, the economics of 19th-century Paris. I find it one of the most intellectually rich circuits I offer.
I have walked all of the surviving passages and selected the six that offer the most varied and rewarding experience — from the most beautiful to the most melancholy, from the most alive to the most eerily preserved. The specific order and timing are confirmed at booking, but the selection is consistent: these are the six passages that tell the full story.
The circuit pairs naturally with the Palais Royal gardens and the surrounding streets of the 1st arrondissement — I include both as natural extensions depending on the pace you choose.
