The real Left Bank — behind the tourist cafés and the designer boutiques — is a neighbourhood of antique dealers, scholars and gardens that has barely changed in a century.
Most visitors arrive on the Left Bank with an image formed by Hemingway, Sartre and the French New Wave and find, instead, a neighbourhood of expensive cafés and international fashion brands. The Left Bank I want to show you exists a few streets behind that image: the antique dealers of the quai Voltaire — the finest concentration of antiquarian trade in the world — the medieval lanes of the Latin Quarter, the gardens of the Luxembourg, the churches that contain some of the finest art in France, and the bookshops that have been selling from the same addresses for over a century.
The quai Voltaire is my favourite street in Paris. The dealers here — many of them third-generation — operate at the intersection of art history, interior design and commercial transaction in a way that is uniquely Parisian. You do not need to be a buyer to enter and look.
Most visitors walk through the Luxembourg in transit. This circuit makes time to sit in it — in an iron chair, under the chestnut trees, beside the Medici Fountain. That is how it is meant to be experienced.
The Left Bank has several extraordinary churches that are consistently overlooked in favour of Notre-Dame and Sacré-Cœur. Some of them contain works that would be major attractions if they were not in a church.
Several of the bookshops on this circuit have been operating from the same address for over a century. They are not simply shops — they are part of the neighbourhood's intellectual infrastructure.
If someone asks me which street in Paris I find consistently rewarding — not the most beautiful, not the most famous, but the one that never disappoints — my answer is the quai Voltaire. The antique dealers, the view of the river, the way the morning light comes through the windows of the shops onto whatever is on display that week. I include it in almost every Left Bank circuit, and I always find something worth stopping in front of.
